The MIDS (Multimodal Information Design Support) System

The Multimodal Information Design Support (MIDS) system is a software tool which aids system developers and designers in properly using multimodal information perceptualization (MIP) in system design. Using MIDS, developers and designers will have access to theoretical and empirical MIP guidelines that factor in the dynamic nature of C4ISR environments and continuous fluctuations in an operator's workload.

During the development process, designers input system specifications from their conceptual design or system requirements documents into MIDS; then MIDS calculates dynamic operator workload and provides support and guidance to developers in the form of design guidelines and heuristics on the use of MIP. Thus, C4ISR systems designed with the support of MIDS will empower developers to provide the right information to the right user at the right time through the optimal modality, thereby maximizing information throughput and minimizing the opportunity for information overload. The use of MIDS in design will create C4ISR systems that optimize the information processing capabilities of battlespace controllers by providing designers with properly applied MIP guidelines grounded in the science of multimodal design.

MIDS will be commercially available December 2006.
